In airline jargon a layover is a connection under 24 hours (under 4 hours on domestic US), and a stopover is anything longer. The distinction matters because stopovers are sometimes free features you can add to a ticket to break up a long trip. Long layovers can also be turned into short city visits if you plan them well.
Layover vs stopover
| Term | Duration | Fare implication |
|---|---|---|
| Layover | Under 24 hours international, under 4 hours domestic US | No fare change |
| Stopover | 24+ hours international, 4+ hours domestic US | Can incur extra fare, or free on some carriers |
| Self-transfer | Two separate tickets | No fare change but no protection |

Short layovers
A short layover (under 90 minutes at a hub) is a tight but usually workable connection. Rules of thumb:
- Sit in a forward-cabin row on the inbound if you have any choice. Every 10 rows deplaning takes about 2 minutes.
- Have your onward gate ready before landing - most airline apps show it in real time.
- Carry your carry-on. Don't check anything you'll need at the destination airport within 4 hours.
- If security or immigration is required, budget the queue realistically - LHR arrivals immigration can eat 30-60 minutes at peak.
- Move quickly but do not run. Missed connections on protected tickets are the airline's problem.
Long layovers
A layover of 6-20 hours can be transformed into a short city visit. Considerations:
- Check whether your nationality can enter the country airside without a visa. Some layovers require a transit visa even to leave airside.
- Estimate real transit time to city center from airport - not just the airport-to-city time.
- Leave 3 hours before your onward flight to return to the airport, clear security and reach the gate.
- Store your carry-on. Most major airports have left-luggage counters, USD 8-15 per bag per 6 hours.
- If you have a lounge access, plan to spend the last hours there rather than the concourse.

Frequently asked
How long a layover is 'perfect'?+
For most travelers, 90-150 minutes at a hub. Long enough to eat and reach the gate calmly, short enough not to feel wasted.
Can I leave the airport on a short layover?+
You can if the country allows it, but budget conservatively. 2 hours minimum airside; 4+ if you want to actually go anywhere.
Do stopovers cost extra miles on award tickets?+
Sometimes. Singapore, ANA, Alaska, JAL all allow stopovers on award tickets, some free, some for a small mileage surcharge (5,000-10,000 miles).
