Airport security is choreographed. Same equipment worldwide, similar procedures, predictable friction points. Once you know the shape of the process, you can prepare in a way that makes the queue faster for you and, incidentally, faster for everyone behind you.
The screening process
- Document check: agent verifies boarding pass and ID. Automated on some gates.
- Divestment: you put items in bins - laptop separately, liquids in a clear bag, jacket off, belt off.
- Walk-through: metal detector or millimeter-wave body scanner.
- Bag screening: X-ray of your bins.
- Possible additional check: pat-down, explosive trace detection swab, or bag inspection.
- Re-composition: you gather your items and move on.
The bottleneck is almost always divestment. A bin held up 30 seconds by someone digging out a laptop backs the line by 3-5 minutes.
Next-generation scanners
CT scanners (computed tomography) are replacing traditional X-ray at major airports through 2025-2027. When they are in use, the process changes:
- Laptops and tablets stay in the bag.
- Liquids in the standard 100 ml containers stay in the bag.
- Some airports even eliminate the liquids bag entirely and allow full-size bottles.
- Body scanners largely eliminate the need for pat-downs on cleared passengers.
Airports with widespread CT scanning as of early 2026:
- Amsterdam Schiphol (all lanes).
- London Heathrow T2, T3, T4, T5 (rolling out; some lanes still traditional).
- Singapore Changi (all lanes).
- Doha Hamad (all lanes).
- JFK T4, T7, T8 (most lanes).
- LAX Terminal B/TBIT, most other lanes still transitioning.
- Chicago O'Hare T1, T2 (most lanes).
How to prepare for the lane
- Wear a belt-free outfit or slip-on shoes if not in PreCheck.
- Move your phone, keys, wallet into your bag before you reach the line, not at the bin.
- Take your laptop out of its case before the bin. Have it half-out of the bag.
- Put your liquids bag in an outer pocket for easy access.
- Empty pockets completely - even a receipt can trigger a re-scan.
- If you have any medical device (pacemaker, insulin pump), tell the officer before you walk through.
- Have your boarding pass and ID in one hand, not buried in a wallet.

TSA PreCheck is the highest ROI for US-based travelers. Global Entry (which includes PreCheck) is even better if you travel internationally more than twice a year. CLEAR works well combined with PreCheck at CLEAR airports but is redundant if you fly through non-CLEAR airports frequently.

Can I keep my medication in my carry-on?+
Yes. Prescription and OTC medication is not restricted by TSA and is exempt from the 100 ml liquid limit. Declare it at the bin if quantity is unusual.
What if I have a hip replacement or other metal implant?+
It will trigger the metal detector. Body scanners often bypass it entirely. Tell the officer if you have concerns; you can request the body scanner.
Are there Global Entry-style programs for non-US citizens?+
Yes - RTP (UK), APEC Business Travel Card, NEXUS (US-Canada), SENTRI (US-Mexico), APIS pre-clearance in various forms.
